Our Services
A one-on-one assessment where we learn about your dog, identify training goals, and build a personalized roadmap for success.
One on one training with the Trainer. Private lessons are personalized sessions focused entirely on you and your dog. These lessons can take place in your home or at a predetermined location depending on what skills we are working on.
Sessions typically run an hour and allow us to address specific behaviors, build communication skills, and guide you through the training process step by step.
Training support right inside your daily routine. Sometimes when a trainer arrives for a lesson, your dog suddenly behaves perfectly and the challenges you wanted help with never appear. Home Base training solves this by having the trainer shadow your normal routine and work your dog in the exact moments where problems typically happen.
This service also acts as a drop in session while you are at work. We can take your dog for a training walk for an hour or work on their general obedience while you are away.
This service functions similarly to a training nanny, allowing the trainer to coach you and your dog through real time situations throughout the day.
Owners may be present for longer sessions or away depending on their preference.
Busy? Schedule day training out in the world with one of our trainers. During an Expedition, we pick your dog up around 9–10 AM and spend the day training until roughly 5-6pm. Your dog travels with the trainer to different locations across the state to practice skills in real environments.
Expeditions may include exposure to new places, animals, people, and everyday situations your dog needs to learn how to navigate.
Sometimes another dog may join the expedition, but each day is planned around the individual needs and abilities of the dogs participating.

We use a balanced training approach, incorporating food rewards, toys, play, environmental reinforcement, and training tools when appropriate. Every dog is different, and there is no single method that works for every team. We take the time to understand your dog's individual personality, motivations, learning style, and challenges before creating a customized training plan.
Rather than focusing solely on obedience commands, we teach dogs the full picture. We help them learn what behaviors are expected, what behaviors are not, and how to navigate everyday situations with confidence. By providing both guidance and accountability, we create dogs that are reliable, adaptable, and capable of making good decisions even when distractions arise.
We believe training tools are exactly that—tools. Whether that's a flat collar, martingale, long line, head halter, or e-collar, we don't shame or judge the equipment people choose to use. Appropriate Tools – Using tools and techniques that works for your dog. We don’t decide what your dog sees as a reward or as a deterrent, they tell us.
Enrichment – Not just taking your dog on walks and giving them a snuffle mat. We will work on skills and activities outside of obedience to keep your dog’s life fulfilled and fun for the both of you.

Your questions, answered.
How long does training take?
Training timelines depend on your dog, your goals, and your consistency outside of sessions. Most owners notice improvements within the first few weeks, but lasting results take practice and follow through.
Basic obedience is often established in 4–8 weeks, while off leash reliability or behavior modification usually takes several months of structured work. Dogs struggling with reactivity, aggression, anxiety, or impulse control often need more time because we’re changing long-term behavior patterns, not just teaching commands.
Our goal is to build a dog you can confidently enjoy in everyday life, not one that only listens during training sessions. The more consistent and involved the owner is, the faster progress tends to happen.
Do you use e-collars?
Yes, for many dogs, we do. When used thoughtfully and introduced correctly, there is simply nothing that competes with the level of clarity, freedom, and reliability an e-collar can provide, especially for off-leash training and real-world accountability.
That said, we are not heavy-handed trainers, and we do not use e-collars as punishment or shortcuts. Our training is heavily rooted in engagement, positive reinforcement, clear communication, and teaching dogs how to succeed. The e-collar is layered in carefully as communication becomes understood, not slapped onto an untrained dog and used to intimidate them.
We also never force tools on owners. Some clients choose not to use an e-collar, and that is completely okay. Our job is to educate, demonstrate, and help you make the best decision for your dog and goals.
Do We Offer Service Dog Training?
Yes, we offer mobility, psychiatric and assistance service dog training.
ESA Training?
While ESA dogs do not need training in order to qualify we are one of the few trainers that offers a dedicated ESA training program. During which, we make sure that your dog is well mannered and can even perform simple tasks to help you in times of stress. By graduating our ESA program, landlords will never have complaints or any reason to raise issue with your dog.
Especially with recent suggested legislation changes that makes ESA dogs subject to stricter behavior requirements.
Any Breeds you don’t train?
No! We train all breeds and all ages of dogs.

We are based in Gardener and work with dogs across the surrounding area, including Leominster, Lowell, Boston, Somerville, Marblehead, Worcester, and parts of southern New Hampshire.

Do you guarantee off-leash reliability?
Off leash reliability is one of our favorite things to build, but no ethical trainer can honestly guarantee perfection in every environment, for every dog, with every owner, forever. Dogs are living animals, not robots.
What looks rock solid with a trainer can sometimes fall apart when owners return to old habits, stop reinforcing training, or unintentionally become inconsistent. We are not blaming owners: real life is messy, and we cannot live with you full time to make sure every interaction goes perfectly after training ends.
What we do guarantee is a clear, proven training system that gives owners the tools, structure, and confidence to accomplish hard things with their dogs. We focus heavily on owner education, guidance, and practical real world skills so training holds up beyond the session itself.
Our goal is not just flashy obedience videos. We want owners to feel empowered taking their dog hiking, to outdoor markets, to breweries, to the beach, through busy public spaces, or simply enjoying more freedom together with trust and clarity on both ends of the leash.
Do owner’s participate in training?
Absolutely — dog training is just as much about training the human as it is the dog. Nobody hires a dog trainer because everything is already going perfectly. Usually, there are communication gaps, unclear boundaries, inconsistent follow-through, or relationship patterns that need to change on both ends of the leash.
The reality is that dogs live with you, not with us. That means lasting results come from owners learning how to communicate clearly, hold accountability, advocate appropriately, and create structure in everyday life. We can build the foundation, but owners are a huge part of maintaining it.
Our programs are designed to be hands-on and practical, helping you understand not just what to do, but why it matters. We want owners to feel confident handling their dog in the real world — whether that means brewery patios, hiking trails, busy neighborhoods, or simply having guests over without chaos.
The best results happen when owners are willing to grow alongside their dog. Training is a team effort, and strong relationships are built through consistency, clarity, trust, and follow-through.
Expert Dog Training in Massachusetts
At Side Quest Dog Training, we help dog owners across Massachusetts build calm, reliable companions they can enjoy anywhere. We offer customized in-home dog training where the trainer comes to you, as well as Day Training, Home School, and Hybrid training programs to fit your goals and lifestyle.
We specialize in behavior modification for reactivity, aggression, and anxiety, along with off-leash obedience and adventure dog training. We also offer American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing for owners who want to earn a nationally recognized obedience title and demonstrate real-world manners.
